Geological Interpretative Center of Canelas

The Bivalves, rostroconchia, gastropods, cephalopods, brachiopods, crinoids, cystoids, hyolithids, conulariida, ostracod, graptolithina and ichnofossils gain life in the Geological Interpretative Center of Canelas. But the trilobites stand out above the others, with the biggest samples of its species in the world. The fossils exhibited here tell us stories about the Earth, some of the most distant chapters of the evolution of life in our planet. Open to the public since 1 July 2006, in the Canelas parish, in the surroundings of the "Pedreira do Valério" (Valério's quarry), this particular museum has played a key role in the study, preservation and disclosure of this patrimony, collected in the emerging slates by the Ardósias Valério & Figueiredo, Lda. company, formed in an old austral sea 465 millions of years ago. Thus, the Geological Interpretative Center of Canelas (CIGC) is an example of cooperation between the extractive industry, the education and the science.

The CIGC promotes, in collaboration with the slate company, the visit to the slate transformation unit and organizes a didactic-pedagogical trail called "Palaeozoic Route", throughout a set of paths in the surrounding area.
