Museum of Chapel of Santa Casa da Misericórdia

The origins of Misericórdias date back to 1498, at the initiative of Queen Leonor (widow of King João II), whose main aim was to aid the disabled people, do charity work and to provide social support.

In the course of the time, over all these centuries, many people have dedicated themselves to this cause, and have been taking care of the beauty of this place, which is the testimony of the works of mercy. The place underwent building improvements, and the works of art have been preserved, making it possible to build this museum center. This interesting collection includes paintings, sculpture, liturgical implements and paraments, representing several periods and artistic styles, from the 17th century to the 19th century, from the mannerism, to the baroque and neoclassical styles.
