S11: “ Between Romans, Christians and Muslims”

Summary: It starts at the Arouca Interactive Tourism store, where you can better understand the history of the municipality of Arouca, obtain more information about the Arouca Municipal Museum, and in particular, the archeology center “In the Moorish period, dedicated to the Christian medieval castles. In this exhibition, besides the brief references to the pre and protohistory, and to the Malafaia’s Roman farmhouse, we can better understand how the first Douro’s lines of defense were organized against the Muslim invasions, and how would be the first castles arisen during the Christian reconquest in Portuguese territory. Then, by bus, you’ll go visit the Santo António Memorial (a funerary monument built between the 12th and 13th centuries) and the Malafaia’s Roman farmhouse, from the final period of the empire. In this local, it is possible to observe the Roman ruins and some of the remnants of the Roman settlement on these lands, from numismatic treasures to mines of gold exploitation.
