Geossítio 39 Pedra Posta
At the top of the Arouca Geopark!
The geosite is located at the highest point of the Arouca Geopark, at 1222 meters above sea level. It occurs in the middle of the highest point of the Montemuro Mountains, between the Chapel of S. Pedro do Campo, the geodesic vertex of Pedra Posta and the Serra de S. Pedro, on the granite of Montemuro. In this area, at an altitude of over 1050 metres, there are several typical elements of the granite landscape, such as the chaos of blocks or polygonal fissures (Pedra Boroa de Montemuro).
Given its altitude and location in the western sector of the Serra de Montemuro, the geosite is also an excellent viewpoint for the other granite landscapes of the Serra de Montemuro, the Douro Valley and the Serra do Marão to the north or the Gralheira Massif and Vale do Paiva to the south. In the easternmost part of the identified area, however, the panoramic view over the fracture valley of the Bestança River and its almost rectilinear course tearing through the granite massif dominates.
Informação Geológica
The Montemuro granite belongs to the domain of late to post-F3 biotitic syn-orogenic granitoids, more precisely to medium-grained porphyroid granites, and is therefore approximately 300 million years old. The plutonic magmatic landscape features several detailed granitic geoforms, such as the “Casa da Moura” taffoni, some bolide stones, slabs, sinks, pseudo-stratifications, cracks and linear grooves, as well as polygonal fissures (Pedra Boroa de Montemuro).
