História Trilobites Museum
Some of the largest and most remarkable examples of trilobite fossils in the world are here. The Trilobites Museum is the result of a private initiative to preserve a collection of worldwide scientific interest, taken from the Canelas quarry (known as “Pedreira do Valério”). This space was inaugurated on July 1, 2006, and exhibits fossils of living beings that inhabited the Earth around 465 million years ago, a geological heritage of international importance, which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world, whether for educational or scientific purposes or just out of curiosity. The architectural design of the building uses the predominant rock in the area, slate, also known as slate, the same rock in which fossilized trilobites are found. This space is divided into three parts, like the body of the trilobites, an auditorium space, the museum area and the reception/shop area. The Trilobites Museum has a 20-minute documentary available, which helps you learn about the history of these fossils and the work done to preserve and enhance them.

Visita Educativa
The Trilobites Museum brings together an important and unique collection of fossils retrieved over two decades from the “Valério Quarry”. This is a unique example of cooperation between the extractive industry and science, which allows us to see bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods, ichnofossils and trilobites, among other fossils. Throughout the collection, the trilobites stand out, beings that are now extinct, with some specimens being the largest in the world. During your visit, you can learn about an important chapter in the history of Planet Earth, the fauna that inhabited the Palaeozoic seas, the characteristics of the trilobites, as well as the edible rock that is found in the region and which is still extracted at the Pedreira do Valério, with countless applications in the construction sector.
