História Arouca Weather Radar
The Arouca Weather Radar is part of the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere’s Radar Network and is located near the village of Castanheira (Serra da Freita). This infrastructure enables the detection and monitoring of severe weather phenomena (rain, strong wind, hail or even tornadoes), which have a strong impact on safeguarding lives, property and various socio-economic activities. We highlight the importance of radar images in sectors such as aeronautics, during visits to the Panoramic Floor, as well as the panoramic view obtained from this geosite of the UNESCO World Geopark of Arouca, where the Ria de Aveiro, Atlantic Ocean, Serra da Estrela, Porto Metropolitan Area, among others, stand out.

When you go up to the tenth floor of the Arouca Meteorological Radar, where the Castanheira Coast Panoramic Geosite (G10) is located, you can see different forms of relief: the Serra da Freita plateau, the Caima River valley and the Fecha da Mizarela waterfall and, on clear days, the Caramulo, Estrela, Montemuro and Gerês mountains and the coastal plain, with the Ria de Aveiro and the Atlantic Ocean in the background.
The visit to this infrastructure includes an analysis of the landforms and the technical framework of this IPMA infrastructure, in the field of weather forecasting and surveillance, especially in the detection and monitoring of adverse weather phenomena, which occasionally lead to natural disasters in the northern region. You can choose to visit this infrastructure alone or as part of an Arouca Geopark Educational Program Field Trip.
