10 – Tungsten: Memories of Wartime
#secundario, #universitario
Once considered a small town, the village of Regoufe has the Poça da Cadela Mining Complex in its immediate vicinity, where, in the middle of World War II, the British set up underground mining operations for tungsten – black gold. This was then sold and exported for the manufacture of weapons and ammunition. Today, the ruins of the technical, administrative and residential facilities, the mine shafts and some heaps remain, helping us to reconstruct the curious history of the region and reflect on the mining industry. The visit begins at the Arouca Interactive Tourism Shop with an introduction to the Arouca UNESCO World Geopark, the origin of the mineral deposits and the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
