Royal fernOsmunda regalis

Perennial plant with a short, thick horizontal rhizome. The petiole is yellowish and bare. The fronds are straight, deciduous and dimorphic. The outer fronds are sterile and the inner fronds are apically fertile. The terminal part of the fertile fronds is brownish-red and covered on both sides by numerous, pedunculated sporangia.

Habitat Damp or peaty soils, also found on gravel by the river or in damp rock crevices.
