A monoecious tree with a broad, regular crown. The trunk is thick, with a brownish-grey bark that darkens with age, with deep longitudinal grooves. The leaves are arranged alternately, simple, glabrous, on both sides, dark green on the upper side and light green on the lower side, with a short petiole. The male flowers are gathered together to form yellowish-green catkins, while the female catkins, formed by groups of 2-3 flowers, are covered in a reddish-brown scaly layer. Its fruit is an acorn.
