Black oakQuercus pyrenaica

A monoecious tree with a broad, irregular crown, sometimes reduced to a shrub. The leaves are simple, alternate, with a short petiole and split into deep, irregular lobes that can reach the central vein. They are also deciduous and often marcescent, and are easily recognized by having a dense layer of hairs when young, on both pages, and then only on the lower page. The male catkins have a rachis covered in hairs. The fruit is an acorn.
