Chestnut treeCastanea sativa

A monoecious tree with a broad crown. The rhytidome is smooth and brownish-grey in color until it is 15-20 years old, then turns dark brown and has longitudinal, often oblique fissures. The leaves are deciduous, oblong-lanceolate, dark green on the upper side and light green on the lower side. The catkins are long and erect, the upper ones androgynous and the lower ones male. The fruit is a chestnut and is found in groups of 2-3 inside a hedgehog.
