Medium-sized species with two dorsal fins, the first of which has rays and the second fin is adipose, i.e. it has no rays. The scales are relatively small. The back is usually greenish-brown or yellowish and the belly is yellowish or white. The spots on the flanks can be reddish or black, with the former surrounded by a colored circle.
