História Portela da Anta
The space was named after the funerary monument that dominates it: a large megalithic mass grave, where some of the oldest inhabitants of the Serra da Freita were buried. The tumulus surrounding the tomb is around 35 meters in diameter, with a dolmen and corridor in the middle. In the excavations carried out here, ceramic fragments, chipped stone utensils and a small copper drill were found, which leads us to point to the occupation of this territory between the end of the 5th millennium BC and the beginning of the 4th. In Roman times, this mortuary space was once again used as a tomb, given its proximity to a road of the time that crossed the entire plateau.
This monument is part of the Serra da Freita Region’s Iter Hominis route.
