From Pumpkins to Sweet Cornbread
This itinerary allows you to explore part of the “Caminhos do Vale Urtigosa” hiking trail and discover places steeped in rural charm in the parish of Urrô. In the village of Souto Redondo, situated on the slopes of the Serra da Freita, you’ll uncover the history of Boroas & Companhia, founded in 2011. This company, synonymous with innovation, uses the countless pumpkins grown in the fields to create sweet pumpkin breads. All products are made entirely by hand. Initially, the sweet pumpkin breads were baked in a wood-fired oven with a capacity of eight loaves. Today, the oven has a capacity of 180 units. As production has increased, new flavors have emerged, such as sweet chestnut and carrot broas, as well as new products, including “pedras boroas,” “trilobites,” and homemade sponge cake. The artisanal production facility at Boroas & Companhia is dedicated to promoting and processing local products, particularly pumpkins, chestnuts, and carrots, which are transformed into delicious sweet broas.
