It is a filter-feeding bivalve mollusc, unisexual or hermaphroditic. The eggs are incubated inside the 4 gills of the females, transformed into a marsupium, giving rise to ecto-parasitic larvae (gloquids) of salmonids.

Habitat It occurs in oligotrophic, clear, low-calcium rivers with well-oxygenated water. It seems to prefer shadier areas, close to river banks. The presence of clean gravel and sand, with little fine sediment, also determines its presence.
