SphagnumSphagnum auriculatum

The Sphagnum genus varies in color and morphology and there are several species in the Arouca Geopark. It has fascicles, usually with long or short hanging branches. They have always been known for their ability to store large amounts of water in their cells – up to around 20-30 times their weight. This ability is possible because the cells are divided into two groups: those that carry out photosynthesis and those that store water, the latter being much larger than the former.
