02 – The Landscape and Granite Forms of Serra da Freita
#secundario, #universitario
In Serra da Freita we can observe a diverse range of landscapes characteristic of granitic areas, such as “block chaos”, residual reliefs or flattened surfaces. Associated with these are curious granite forms such as rock domes, “castle koppie“, sinkholes, linear cracks, polygonal fissures or others, which can be seen when we walk up the mountain, where the granite sand appears at our feet. The murmur of the water identifies the proximity to the valley of the River Caima, characteristically embedded in the granite region. In the riverbed, you can see giant tidepools and witness the human power, in ancient times, to take advantage of the waters. And it is precisely from the village of Castanheira, at the Casa das Pedras Parideiras, that we begin our visit to discover the stories of Planet Earth and Man, to learn about the specificities of the Castanheira Nodular Granite and this internationally important geosite of the UNESCO World Geopark of Arouca.
