07 – Castanheira: Two Geosites, a UNESCO World Geopark

In Castanheira, Serra da Freita, two emblematic geosites await you: the Pedras Parideiras, a geosite of international importance in the UNESCO World Geopark of Arouca, and the Panoramic View of the Castanheira Coast, obtained from Floor 10 of the Arouca Meteorological Radar, an infrastructure of the IPMA – Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere. The visit will be adapted to the target audience, exploring the rocks that outcrop in the region, the landscape observed from Pico do Gralheiro and the technical operation of the Radar, which is unique in the north of Portugal and of the utmost importance in detecting and monitoring adverse weather phenomena.

Notes
- Pre-school and primary school students will watch the documentary “The History of Man in the Arouca Geopark” at Casa das Pedras Parideiras. From the 2nd grade onwards, the documentary “Pedras Parideiras: um tesouro geológico” will be shown;
- For each program, a maximum of 30 students and a minimum of 15 are admitted per monitor. For lower or higher numbers of participants, please contact the services;
- The auditorium at Casa das Pedras Parideiras has a seating capacity of 30 people;
- In the event of rain, snow, thunderstorms, fog or very cold weather, we suggest changing the date of the visit. The group must ensure this when booking transportation;
- In the event of snow and/or ice, access to the Serra da Freita may be prohibited;
- Participants should bring comfortable footwear and clothing suitable for the weather forecast for Serra da Freita. On hot days, sunscreen, a hat and water are recommended. On cold days, they should bring several layers of clothing and avoid fabric shoes.
