28 – Discovering Amphibians with Why Not On Nature
#segundociclo
Serra da Freita is a mountainous region with significant biodiversity, including a significant variety of amphibians. Among the amphibians easily found in the Serra are some species typical of mainland Portugal. Some examples include:
- Orange-bellied newt(Lissotriton boscai): This is a small newt that inhabits areas with fresh water, such as ponds and streams, usually at higher altitudes.
- Iberian frog(Rana iberica): This species is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and can be found in ponds, lagoons and watercourses in the Serra da Freita.
- Lusitanian salamander(Chioglossa lusitanica): This is a small salamander that occurs in woodland areas, especially in oak forests, often near watercourses.
In addition to these species, other species of amphibians can also be found, such as toads and other newts, which are common in the region’s aquatic and humid environments under cover of night.
As well as interacting with the species, we will raise awareness of how the preservation and conservation of the natural habitats in the Serra da Freita are fundamental to the maintenance and survival of these species of amphibians and all the region’s biodiversity.
Points of interest: Albergaria da Serra Recreation and Leisure Area, Albergaria da Serra Inscription, Portela da Anta, Monte Calvo and the Cabaços Quartz Lode and Pedras Parideiras geosites.
