Geossítio 19 Conheiros de Janarde
There’s gold in Paiva!
Near the village of Janarde (easily seen from the high point overlooking it), on the right bank of the River Paiva, you can see Conheiras: heaps of pebbles and river pebbles. These tailings deposits are the result of the process of separating materials that took place in the region during Roman times. At that time, people went down to the river to mine and wash the sediments (pebbles, cobbles, sands and others) in search of (alluvial) gold, which was trapped, along with other sediments carried by the water, in the calmer areas of the river’s bends (meanders). The Conheiros de Janarde are part of the Iter Hominis Vale do Paiva trail.
When you take the PR5 geotourist walking route, which is linear and 1.5km long, you can see this geosite from a distance.
Este geossítio faz parte do itinerário B: Through the mines and unknown corners of Paiva.

Informação Geológica
Ancient alluvial gold mining, probably started by the Romans, in the deposits accumulated in the convex phase of the meanders (heaps of pebbles and cobbles). These piles of pebbles bear witness to open-pit mining on the banks of the Paiva. The conheiros are the result of the dismantling of the river terraces by washing away the fine matrix.
