Geossítio 21 Ichnofossils from Meitriz

In search of ancient marks of life…

The Meitriz Ichnofossils occur in quartzite rock outcrops that stand out in the landscape, between the villages of Meitriz (Arouca) and Pereiró (Castro Daire), on both banks of the River Paiva. These rocks are the result of the deposition, in a shallow marine environment, around 475 million years ago, of sands which have preserved countless traces of the activity of living beings (ichnofossils), including the Cruziana tracks, resulting from the activity of arthropods such as trilobites.

There are important outcrops of C. rugosa, with a rusiciform appearance on large plates, and C. furcifera. There are also large planes with cross-sections of other ichnofossils such as Daedalus halli, Skolithos linearis, Monocraterion isp. and Planolites beverleyensis. In addition to the ichnological finds, the existence of large stratification surfaces covered in ripples is truly unique.
