Geosite 34 Ichnofossils from Vilarinho

Marks of life from the past…

The Vilarinho Ichnofossils, located in quartzite rocks to the west of the town, have a significant quantity and diversity of ichnofossils: marks of the activity of living beings (ichnofossils), where the Cruziana tracks stand out, resulting from the activity of arthropods such as trilobites.

The quartzite rocks are the result of the deposition in shallow marine environments of sands which preserved the activity of living beings that inhabited the seas around 475 million years ago.

Particularly noteworthy in the large stratification surfaces of Vilarinho are the large number of tracks, especially Cruziana furcifera, with linear behavior, reaching lengths of more than 1 m and sub-circular. Other marks and tracks are also frequent, such as Cruziana rugosa, Cruziana goldfussi, Cruziana barriosi, Didymaulichnus isp., Monomorphichnus isp., Arenicolites isp., Daedalus halli and Skolithos linearis.
