História Chapel of Mercy

Devotees had this chapel built in 1612. This is what we read on the frontispiece of this chapel, whose building is the result of the synthesis of various architectural styles (Mannerism, Baroque and Rococo). Of particular note are the paintings of some of the most important saints of the Catholic Church, especially the apostles and evangelists, in coffered ceilings throughout the central nave. In the annexed spaces of the sacristy and the dispatch house, there is an interesting collection of sacred art, with pieces from the 17th to the 19th century. Highlights include some sculptures, implements and vestments, as well as a collection of paintings, essentially centred on the Passion of Christ, a special devotion of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Arouca, which owns the chapel and organizes the Procession of the Bonfires during Holy Week. This chapel has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1959.

Throughout the educational visits, the curious collection of paintings, sculptures, liturgical implements and vestments allows you to explore the various periods and artistic styles, from the 17th to the 19th century: from Mannerism to the Baroque and even the Neoclassical, and learn about the development of the Misericórdias, whose fundamental aim was to assist the destitute, charity, social support, but also the preservation of heritage.
