História Museum Center of the Misericórdia de Arouca Chapel
The origins of the Misericórdias date back to 1498, on the initiative of D. Leonor (widow of D. João II), with the fundamental aim of assisting the destitute, charity and social support. Over the centuries, many people have dedicated themselves to this cause and have ensured the beauty of this place, which bears witness to the works of mercy.
The space has been renovated and the works of art preserved, making it possible today to create this museum. Painting, sculpture, liturgical implements and paramentaria make up this curious collection, which presents us with various periods and artistic styles, from the 17th to the 19th century, from Mannerism to Baroque and Neoclassicism.
